February 6th, 2020. My oldest Silkie hen went broody for the first time a few weeks ago – in January! I was worried about her not sticking with it long enough to hatch eggs, or that it would be too cold for her to hatch eggs, so I decided to give her incubator chicks as they hatched. She is doing just great!!!
As soon as I gave her the first just-hatched chick, she started making mama noises to it and getting it tucked underneath her. I then moved her and the chick into the house. It’s too cold here in northeast Ohio for me to feel comfortable having her raise chicks outside, especially since this is her first time being a mom.
